“The Lion King” hits $1 billion mark and it’s not alone
“The Lion King” is set to pass the $1 billion mark today, after just 19 days at the box office, making it the 4th Disney film this year to do so.
The classic 1994 animated film remake has earned $360.9 million at the US box office, whilst making an additional $638.5 million internationally. On Monday, the total for the film stood at $999.4 million. All this considering that on its opening weekend, the film was given a score of 55% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics found that whilst the animation and effects were stunning, the musical numbers were boring.
However, analysts expect the film to continue its run long into the summer, and at one time the film was predicted to be the one of the biggest films of the year, if not the biggest.
“Avengers : Endgame”, another Disney film, now holds the record for the highest grossing film of all time, stealing the mantle from “Avatar”.
So far this year, three other Disney films have all surpassed $1 billion: “Captain Marvel”, “Aladdin” and as mentioned, “Avengers : Endgame”. “Toy Story 4” will soon be the fifth, given it has already accrued $919.1 million during its time in cinemas.
In total, Disney have made more than $7.67 billion at the box office this year, the highest ever for a single studio, and its only August! Disney still have some huge films yet to come this year, with “Frozen 2”, “Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker” and “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” still to come!
Disney therefore, is predicted with all its blockbusters included, to bring in a minimum of $9 billion this year.
